This month I built a simple resume builder with the main goal of practicing front-end development, and to scratch an itch I had when updating my resume. :) After it was functional enough, I casually shared with some friends to express my enjoyment of crafting something just for the sake of having some fun. To my surprise they ended up asking how they could send to others. So I went one step further, due to my pure excitement, and hosted it on Netlify to make publicly available. In case you're curious, I used the React component library Mantine[1] in this project. I loved it, so I definitely recommend to check it out for your next React project. Have thoughts to share? It is a big update so I decided to share it here and get your feedback :) NetBird creates an overlay peer-to-peer network connecting machines automatically regardless of their location (home, office, data center, container, cloud, or edge environments) unifying virtual private network management experience. It uses ICE protocol (WebRTC) to negotiate p2p connections and WireGuard (kernel module, when possible) to create a fast and encrypted tunnel between machines, falling back to relay (TURN) in case a p2p connection isn't possible. Pretty much just a client application installation is needed, the rest is done by the software! Sharing the project with you wasn't the only purpose of the post. I wanted to discuss the future and vision behind it. I'm pretty sure that in a few years, such seamless connectivity without the hassle of configuring firewalls, managing IPs, manual key rotations, centralized gateways, etc. will become a commodity and the majority won't be talking about traditional VPNs. But what we think is becoming more relevant is advanced network security. We've seen the rise of Zero Trust with its ZTNA solutions in the past years. There are big vendors like ZScaler or Palo Alto already offering advanced network security features that leverage ML or contextual access controls to allow/block access based on context, not just identity. Why can't this be open-source and built on top of universal connectivity that works anywhere? That is what we are setting as a mission for our project - to bring seamless connectivity and advanced network security together in a single open-source solution. What do you think about it? The first one being TaskTXT ( https://www.tasktxt.com ), a plaintext notepad with built-in timers. It's full of UI details that were a joy to build with Imba. Trying to build things like this with React in the past honestly made me feel dumb. Imba ( https://www.imba.io ) is a language that compiles to Javascript, like TypeScript or JSX. Imba's syntax diverges much more from Javascript, looking more like Python or Ruby. It's compatible with Javascript and Typescript and NPM modules. It also has fantastic VSCode tooling and even supports TypeScript types. I like Imba syntax better than JS, but the real selling point is the built-in features for building web UI. Imba has first-class support for html tags, css styles, and custom web components. Those are all parts of the language. For me, Imba has replaced Javascript, HTML, CSS and React. Imba's "Memoized DOM" model for updating the UI is an order of magnitude faster than virtual DOM approaches. This allows for simple state management, because you can pretty much re-render the whole UI whenever you want and Imba manages to do that very efficiently. People often ask for examples of things made with Imba, and the most prominent one is the learn-to-code site, Scrimba.com and its interactive editor. Scrimba was was built by Sindre (creator of Imba) and the Scrimba team. The fact that Scrimba's editor was made with Imba grabbed my attention when I first learned about the language. It's one of the most impressive web applications I've ever seen. Sindre originally built Scrimba to share Imba, but until now there's not been a real Imba course on Scrimba! So, I'm pleased to be fixing that today. I know Imba looks strange to a lot of people. Imba programmers are used to people looking at it and declaring it to be stupid and wrong. Show HN: Babeloop, a new music sight-reading webapp Backstory: I have a kid learning to play the clarinet in a music conservatory, which involves compulsory sight reading classes. Teaching for sight reading is done on books. The idea for this app is to port the method online, so that it's easier to practice and follow one's progress. It should also be more fun, and, for those so inclined, competitive. The learning method is based on landmarks: for each clef one first learns the position of 2-3 landmarks, and then each note is in relation to a landmark. So for example, if you know where the middle G is on the treble clef, then you can learn fast that 2 positions up (next line) is B, and two positions down is E. (Anecdotally, in an earlier iteration of the app, landmark notes were displayed using specific colors; but users learned colors instead of the note position on the staff, and when they moved to a level without colors (or an actual score) they were completely lost.) The app doesn't try to teach keyboard playing, or fingering for any other instrument for that matter. It only helps associate the position of a note on the staff with a name, in a given clef. It doesn't deal with octaves: a C3 is a C4 is a C; or accidentals: a sharp G is a flat G is a G. It also doesn't wait for user input, as other apps do. Music doesn't work that way; but more importantly, the point is to learn to recognize intervals instantly, not count them. No account is necessary to use the app, only to participate in the leaderboard, and save one's score in case of device reset (or to use more than one device). When an account is created, the data is stored on the server in SQLite; I'm curious to see how far it can go. (Without an account, no data leaves the device.) It's still a little rough around the edges but should work ok in reasonably recent browsers. On the client side, it uses VexFlow to display notes, staff and clefs, but animations are done using CSS transitions (not JS), to be mobile friendly. Tone.js helps provide a more accurate timing than a simple setInterval. I was just blown away by how productive you can be in Laravel. However, like many of you, I've been so spoiled by Go. I didn't want to go back to writing PHP, so I decided to try creating Laravel for the Go ecosystem. At this point, I just had the following goal: • Be as productive as Laravel in a typed language like Go. I got the first version working in 6 months and tried building a blog from it... It fell flat. You needed to scaffold all these files just to get started. If you're coming from Rails or Laravel you may shrug, this is pretty normal. Unfortunately, I've also been spoiled by the renaissance in frontend frameworks like Next.js. What I love about Next is that it starts out barebones and every file you add incrementally enhances your web application. This keeps the initial complexity under control. With these newly discovered constraints, I started working on the next iteration. Bud should: • Generate files only as you need them. Keep these generated files away from your application code and give developers the choice to keep them out of source control. • Feel like using a modern JS framework. This means it should work with modern frontend frameworks like Svelte and React, support live reload and have server-side rendering for better performance and SEO. With these new goals, the Bud you see today started to take shape. But along the way, I discovered a few more project goals: • The framework should be extensible from Day 1. Bud is too ambitious for one person. We're going to need an ambitious community behind this framework. • Bud should be able to provide high-level APIs for developers while compiling down to performant low-level Go code for production. • Bud should compile to a single binary. With platforms like Fly.io and Heroku, these days it's easy to not care about this, but I still cherish the idea that I can build a single binary that contains my entire web app and secure copy it up to a tiny server that doesn't even have Go installed. Show HN: Catchy melodies made with a diffusion-based neural net assistant I've created a diffusion-based neural net generative assistant that makes creating new melodies much easier, even for non-musicians like me. These are meant to be just the catchy "hook" parts of songs, so more work is required to make them into full songs, but this is already handled well by existing products (e.g. there are plugins that can suggest a few possible chord progressions based on the melody and there is even good singing software that I used without any tweaks to make the “voice” playlist: Synthesizer V Studio). This side project turned out to be quite challenging because of how little data there is to train on - several orders of magnitude less than DALL-E or GPT-3 had available for its training, so it required a deep dive into research of new generalization and augmentation techniques and some feature engineering. It can create both layer 2/Ethernet and layer 3/IP overlay networks, and the underlying transport layer can be easily embedded to write your own P2P apps with Go. Compared to for example Tailscale, WireGuard and ZeroTier, its much harder to block on a network level and also significantly easier to set up, while not sacrifing much performance. Show HN: I made Ankify that converts notes to Anki cards Backstory: I was in medical school and had to study a ton of materials in short period of time. I came across Anki but always had trouble with making cards. In my mind, making cards should be quick, seconds instead of minutes. My other problem is after making the cards, each card does not really relate to the other. When you study the individual card, your thought process is very random and not cohesive. I wanted to be able to still reference to my notes for big concepts and then use the cards to memorize the details but also for long term retention. Ankify came out of that. At the time, I did not know any programming and paid someone to write a script in Python to convert the cards. Then, eventually I learned Python myself and expanded on the script. I also uploaded the markdown files online so I could view them anywhere ( https://ift.tt/4e2AFHK ). I ran into a wall in making user interface for the program. It was difficult to make good looking cross platform user interface with Python. I gave up on making user interface for a year or two with end of med school and residency. After a while, I went back to see if anyone else had made anything similar. Despite many plugins/programs that makes it easy to make cards, none of them really focused on readability of the original notes. I decided to sit down and learn javascript to help with UI creation. After about 3 years, everything finally came together after I learned Svelte, Tailwind, and Electron. I know Electron is not the most efficient program, but it's what works for me. Also, it's also the feeling of being able to make whatever my mind can think of. It feels really refreshing and empowering. Even making the website for Ankify is a lot of fun. This is a bill I drafted that would stop the DMV, voter registration, property tax records, and the post office from selling or publishing without explicit user consent. It would also require personal information to be accompanied with the provenance of that data. This way, a user can track down who or what is publishing their data and take action to end their relationship with that company. Show HN: I am building a free version of Strava I recently added a Segments feature to the Hangtime mountain biking app for Android and IOS. If you are familiar with Strava’s segments, this new feature works much the same. For example, you can add a segment to an existing recorded ride by simply defining a start and end point for the segment. Once the segment is created, it will match any new rides, and optionally “back match” all previous rides. If a segment matches a ride, you you will see your time to complete that segment as well as your personal record (PR) and king of the mountain (KOM) for that segment. The KOM represents the best segment time amongst all riders that have matched that segment. You can also open the segment to see your complete history on that segment to gauge how your performance has changed over time. On the page with navigation, 2.) visible before you open the link, and 3.) to increase quality and relevance, follow and search highlights by trusted people like friends, co-workers, university peers, and industry leaders. There’s too much information and not enough time. Highlights are short, useful, and fast to read. Kontxt.io lets you direct attention to what matters. First, it lets you find quality sources from trusted people, then it lets you focus on the important parts of them. Kontxt basically turns the web into an interactive workspace so you can have rich web interactions with other Kontxt users. Or you can extract highlights into a shareable link and post it anywhere on the web–with analytics for what you share. Highlights are automatically saved to the CMS and based on their privacy settings, may be published to feeds in the social network for others to see. Naturally, you may want to discuss the same site with different people for disparate reasons, so you can create multiple highlight layers on a single site, each with Google-Doc-like sharing, privacy, and authorization controls. It’s now evolved into a general communication and engagement platform for the web. It brings collaboration directly to the web itself and is already part of your natural workflow since it's always with you every click of the way. However, I think many parts of it could be easier to configure or understand, especially when it comes to LSPs. There's a ton of plugins that fill the gap, but some of them are sparse in documentation. There's also distributions like LunarVim that attempt to add a Doom Emacs-like layer above. My approach is a bit different, simply giving an opinionated, modular, and documented configuration that an interested user can easily modify to their needs. It makes use of the most helpful plugins I've encountered to create the best experience I could muster while retaining an air of simplicity. Previously I worked on a popular open source project which had a sizable Slack community. Slack was great for engaging with community members and with early sales. However as community scales Slack becomes this black hole where context becomes lost. Most public communities can’t afford to pay for several hundred/thousand members so they are limited to 10,000 free messages. You run into the problem of people asking repeat questions and not searching in Slack. It also doesn’t help that the Slack UX encourages posting and not searching. We experimented with Github discussions and Discourse but didn’t want another channel to maintain and split the community on. With Linen I wanted to build a tool that is very low maintenance without changing my current workflow. By making it search engine friendly and putting it on a website the community members can find answers to repeat questions before ever getting into your Slack channel. Show HN: I'm making a dynamic language in Rust https://ift.tt/lfAdGk3 An implementation of a dynamic programming language in Rust. Includes: Parser/Compiler, REPL, Virtual Machine, Bytecode Disassembler This started out as a learning project to teach myself Rust. It has grown into a decently substantial piece of software and I've learned quite a bit in the process! Some neat things: + A garbage collector that can store dynamically sized types without any double-indirection (i.e. I have my own Box implementation with manual alloc/dealloc) + The smart pointer used to reference GCed data is a thin pointer. The ptr metadata needed for DSTs is stored in the GC allocation itself, so that the GC smart pointer is just a single usize wide. This allows me to keep the core value enum Variant down to 16 bytes (8 bytes for data, the enum discriminant, and some padding). + The GC also supports weak references! + Statically dispatched type object model using a newtype wrapper and Rust's declarative macros. Ok, what that means is that I have a MetaObject trait that I can use to easily add new data types and define the behavior for specific types. Similar idea to Python's PyTypeObject though very different in implementation. However, I don't resort to dynamic dispatch or trait objects despite working with dynamically type data. Instead, I have a newtype wrapper over the core value enum Variant that statically dispatches to each of the enum branches! And then a few macros that minimize the boilerplate required if I want to add a new branch to Variant or a new method to MetaObject (just a single line in each case). + Different string representations! This was inspired by the flexstr crate. Strings that are short enough to fit inside a Variant are "inlined" directly in the value. Longer strings are either GCed or interned in a thread-local string table. All identifiers are interned. + An efficient implementation of closures inspired by Lua's upvalues. The language is still pretty WIP. I'm planning to add an import system, a small standard library, and a few other things (Yes, the name might not be the best, being also used by a well-known ReST docs generator, I'll take suggestions. And it made us see a problem right under our nose: everyone just wanted flexibility & speed from a spreadsheet. But they have to stay in sync with {Jira / Salesforce / insert SaaS app}. When we followed this thread, we discovered how broken the integration experience was for flexible products like Airtable, Smartsheet, Monday, and Google Sheets. Their big problem is that they transform external data into their own format. This makes setup harder, since you have to get the mapping just right. And often you can’t sync back. We took a different path when building Visor. We essentially made a data lake & ETL tool with a front-end. Visor integrates with your Jira instance, reads its schema, helps you import the right data, and lets you work in a flexible spreadsheet* that syncs both ways. So far, I've spent about 2 months developing it, and as a college student, it honestly helped me learn more about computer science than any undergrad course we have. Also, after getting the inspiration from HN, I wanted to prove to myself that, in 2022, anyone could build a full-fledged web service alone. Thanks to its modern-yet-traditional infrastructure, HEYHEY is costing me about 0 dollars a month to run (so far!). I really wanted to keep the service simple but functional. So naturally, I tried to stay away from a JS-based front-end. Instead, HEYHEY uses simple HTML pages with modern CSS and forms to function (you can disable JS!). Last week, I silently turned on registers, and if you register today, you will have a 10% chance to get Pro for life — it enables custom usernames (heyhey.to/[username]) and rich themes. I am not trying to take over the "Linktree space", nor trying to build a unicorn startup. After making HEYHEY presentable, I just wanted others to have access to it as well. Show HN: Tool for freelancers to calculate how much money to set aside After having been a regular employee for years, I worked as a freelancer for a while. Going into my freelancing life I had no real mental model for how much of the money I earned was truly mine to spend, and how much of it I needed to set aside for taxes, vacations, retirement, and in case I got sick. I modelled this in Excel as best I could and was quite surprised both by how complicated it was to get right, and how much money I actually needed to set aside! As my girlfriend also started freelancing last year, I decided to turn my Excel sheet into a little program she could use too, and in the spirit of sharing and helping others I would hereby like to make it available to you all too :) My biggest take-away so far has been that most people dramatically underestimate how much they need to set aside, and forget to plan adequately for getting sick and for retirement. Plenty of folks have pointed out how the lack of native support for color doomed HyperCard. But I think it was really over when the web got started and replaced everything in the "personal content" space from underneath, so I decided to see if the idea of HyperCard would work as a web app. There are some missing pieces -- it's not perfectly compatible. Show HN: Razer x Lambda Tensorbook Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster. I want to share with you all something we've been working on for a while at Lambda: the Razer x Lambda Tensorbook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMh6Dhq7P_Q But before I tell you about it, I want to make this all about me, because I built this for me. See, while I'm genuinely interested in hearing from the community what you think as this is the culmination of a lot of effort from a lot of people across so many different fields (seriously, the number of folks across manufacturing, engineering, design, logistics, and marketing who have had to work together to launch this is nuts), I really just want to tie the larger motivations for Tensorbook as a product back to a personal narrative to explain why I'm so proud. So, flashback to 2018, and I'm a hardware engineer focusing on the compute system at Lyft's autonomous vehicle (AV) program, Level5 (L5). Here was a project that that would save lives, that would improve the human condition, that was all ready to go. I saw my role as coming in to product-ize, to take what was close to the finish line and get it over it. The disappointment was pretty brutal when I realized just how wrong I was. It's one thing to nod along when reading Knuth write "premature optimization is the root of all evil"; it's another to experience it firsthand. At Lyft L5 I thought I would be applying specialized inference accelerators (Habana, Groq, Graphcore, etc.) into the vehicle compute system. Instead, the only requirement that mattered org-wide was: "Don't do anything that slows down the perception team". Forget testing silicon with the potential to reduce power requirements by 10x, I was lucky to get a willing ear to hear my case for changing a flag in the TensorFlow runtime to perform inference at FP16 instead of FP32. Don't get me wrong, there were a multitude of other difficult technical challenges to solve outside of the deep learning ones that were gating, but I had underestimated just how not-ready the CNNs for object detection and classification were. Something I thought was a solved problem was very much not, and ultimately resulted in my team and others building a 5,000 watt monster of server (+ power distribution, + thermals, + chassis, etc etc) that took up an entire rear row of seating. I'm happy to talk about that experience in the comments because I have a lot of fond memories from my time there. Anyway, the takeaway I have from Lyft, and my first motivation here is that there is no such thing as over-provisioning or too much compute in a deep learning engineer's mind. Anything less than the most possible is a detriment to their workflow. I still truly believe AVs will save lives; so by extension, enabling deep learning engineers enables AVs enables improvement to the human condition. Transitive property, :thumbsup: So moving on, my following role in industry was characterized by working closely with the least technical people I have ever had the opportunity to work with in my life. And I mean opportunity genuinely, because doing so gave me so much perspective on the things that you and I here probably take for granted. (How do we know that Ctrl+Alt+T will open a terminal? Why does `touch` make a file? How do I quit vim?) So, the takeaway from that experience, and motivation #2 for me is that computers can be so unaccessible in surprising ways. I have a deep respect and appreciation for Linux, and I want others to see things the same way, so anything I can do to make easier the process of "self-serving" or "bootstrapping" to my level of understanding, is something worth doing to me. So, with those two personal motivations outlined, I present to you, for your consideration, the Razer x Lambda Tensorbook. Current tool set: Calculate hashes; encode and decode HTML, URI, Base64; convert numbers between different bases; parse and manipulate various time formats; format and inspect IPv4/CIDR addresses; search all v13.1 emoji with quick copying in various formats. It runs entirely offline, making no external requests (even emoji PNG files are bundled), and only requires local storage permission to remember your last tab and input. This was inspired by an old extension called Hasher (no longer on the Chrome Store) that provided a simple interface to similar utilities. This was an opportunity to get back into making extensions, practice with Vue a bit, and expand upon the original idea. Show HN: Relevanto (beta) – I curate the relevant web Hi! This is Alex Dragusin and lately I've been working on Relevanto where I look for and save the best of the web. I literally search through search engines for the best of everything (yes, lots of site:reddit.com in there and so on), check it out if it's legit (I search for reputational data like reviews etc) save it, categorize it and list it on Relevanto. I have a knack for curation and organization so I am putting my skills to, hopefully good use. This, at this point is intended for a global audience, stuff that make sense for most people. I got fed up with Google and other search engines results being filled with too many results that are not really useful and I hope Relevanto will eventually be a gateway for most of the stuffs I do on the web, leaving the search engines for more specific stuffs - to use them as an option rather than primary way. Love speed and privacy. I am big on privacy thus no tracking and the usual nonsense. The site is static and managed by a backend I created through which I manage the sites in the database. The static exporter is written in PHP. Nothing too fancy. I am constantly adding, adjusting and since it's beta, many more categories are coming up. In the works: *apart from the highlighter, a similar function that will filter all the sites by [keyword], that is, show only what contain [keyword], hide everything else. *dedicated pages, for example Music, on this page there will be all about music from links to websites for consumption to tools of creation to news and so on. Monetization: Will monetize in 2 ways, one by having a Marketplace page (the only place for ads, no ads on other parts of the site as long as I am at the helm), where one can advertise their service/product/company for a consistent fee (aka high barrier of entry) while abiding by strict guidelines (Money is good but not at the expense of my visitors!) and second by patronages taken through Patreon or other provider. That's it, the goal is not endless growth at the expense of the users but to provide value, real value! This is the future of the web, the relevant web! Show HN: Lisp in Five Days Hi HN! I kept hearing about Lisp and why it was special but didn't have a great place to start. I wanted something self-contained that helped me develop intuition rather than fluency. My hope is this is helpful for casual programmers, professionals from other fields who interact with code, or engineers who haven't had much exposure to interpreters or compilers. Show HN: Bookable Schedule – Schedule meetings directly inside ONE email Hi Hacker News! We released a new meeting scheduling product today! You can use Bookable Schedule in Boomerang for Gmail or our iOS app to create a set of availabilities and share it as many times as you’d like inside your email. Recipients receive an image of your live availabilities and through the use of image maps, they can see and pick the right appointment slots directly inside whichever email client they’re using. If the recipient also has Boomerang, they can overlay their calendar on top of the schedule (still inside the email) to see which times work best for them! It works great for things like office hours, client appointments, sales calls, and more. It also doesn't shift the work of scheduling meetings to the person you're inviting, so it's better etiquette[1] and easier for recipients as well as the scheduler. Show HN: Code reviews intimidated me, so I built a course on how to master them I’m excited to share Master the Code Review: forge a better process, give better reviews, write better code. It’s a video course with 4+ hours of content [1]. I’ve linked a 21-minute sample below [2]. 6 years ago, I began my software engineering career at Amazon Web Services. I struggled with Pull Requests. My authored PRs received many comments, sometimes 50+. They went through many revisions, sometimes 7+. I often shipped late. My reviews of other PRs were surface level and counterproductive. Long story short: I improved. Through trial, error and experience I learned how to be effective in all 3 dimensions of code reviews: process, reviewer, and author. I came to realize that there isn’t much information out there, giving developers actionable guidance to succeed in a code review environment. Doing so takes specific soft skills, social skills, and technical skills. Very few people talk about them. Late 2020, I started writing about code reviews on my Medium, Twitter [3] and LinkedIn. I grew from 0 to almost 17K followers across platforms. The internet held me accountable for ambiguities and inaccuracies of my public writing. I learned a lot, and leveraged both positive and negative feedback to refine my ideas. My writing experience gave me the confidence to build the course. I created it for my younger self, and I hope developers everywhere find it useful. I launched it a month ago. So far there have been more than 650 students.
