Show HN: GreenSwapp – API to track CO2 of food products at scale Hi guys! We’re Ajay & Jainit, and we’re super excited to launch GreenSwapp to the HN community! GreenSwapp is an API that tracks product and recipe-wise carbon footprints at scale, for food products. Tracking carbon footprints of individual food products is hard because you’d have to trace it all the way back to the farm and account for all the energy inputs till the point of sale. Each such analysis takes about 6 months to do, and in many cases, it is hard to even map this journey. For food products that typically have multiple ingredients (i.e. they are recipes), you have to do this for each ingredient. Supermarkets have about 30k unique products per store. If you do the math, you’ll see that this quickly becomes impossible to do manually, in a reasonable amount of time. After my Masters’ in Sustainability & Engineering, I (Ajay) worked as a climate & impact consultant for more than a decade. I first discovered this problem 5 years ago (as I ran my own sustainability consultancy), when I saw some of my large food brand & retail clients struggling to identify their highest impact products & suppliers. More recently, we found that food platforms (such as Uber Eats & Yelp) want to track the climate impact of their recipes and restaurants too. We do the hard work of estimating carbon emissions using a combination of product meta-data / supply chain attributes (such as origin location, farming type, packaging type etc.) and aggregated product carbon footprints from peer-reviewed journals. Our core dataset is a comprehensive list of food types found in supermarkets. We use an ML model (semantic search using sentence transformers) to match queried product names to our standard list of product types and retrieve their median supply chain carbon footprints. This enables us to track impact at scale (thousands of products in minutes), making it easy and cheap for you to track product-level emissions. This would allow you to easily a) report emissions, b) identify high impact products, brands, and suppliers in your inventory, and c) communicate impact with consumers. What if my product is more sustainable? We identify every supply chain attribute that might reduce a product’s impact (such as organic farming, better packaging material, locally grown) and apply a correction factor (also obtained from peer-reviewed life cycle analyses papers). Show HN: Speed of all of your processes across entire stack in one dashboard I built Checkpoints App out of my experience of not being able to quickly and easily measure the speed of processes across my tech stack in my startup. All startups optimize for speed in all of their operations: deploying code, responding to API requests, loading the UI, and in background processes such as sending emails to users or processing data in an ETL pipeline. But the tools available to measure the performance of all these operations are separate and time-costly to integrate, in the first place. Checkpoints App allows you to measure the speed of processes across your entire stack with minimal overhead and collects that data into a single dashboard. Integrating it into your tech stack is as easy as dropping a `print()` statement in your code, while you're writing it. It comes with client-side Python, JS and Bash scripts. You drop checkpoint statements anywhere in the code, defining a process name and checkpoint name, for example: `./checkpoints.sh process1 checkpoint1` where process1 is your process name and checkpoint1 is your checkpoint name. Once you've dropped checkpoints in your code. It will automatically create the process pipelines in your dashboard along with the speed metrics i.e, how long does it take, on average, to go from checkpoint1 to checkpoint2 . It has a T-SQL inspired syntax with support for functions and procedures. It can be used stand-alone as a SQL engine or with a server allowing for persistence and replication to other connected clients. Performance are nothing near sqlite of course but that's beside the point. It’s a small database engine that can run in a web app as a way to store session data, do small calculations on a web worker, store the document/data the user is editing or facilitate “multiplayer” feature by broadcasting the queries the web app is running. I've always used to-do lists to keep me productive and stave off anxiety (not sure why they work so well for me but they do). I get kinda annoyed at the to-do list apps on the app stores because they move tasks to the bottom of the list when you tick them off. Some people may like that, but it annoys the shit out of me, because I like to feel a sense of progression as I go down through the list over the course of the day. We built WalletWatch as an easier, more social, and more fun way to see and engage with your friends’ Ethereum activity. We don’t ask for your email or password, and instead authenticate by asking users to sign a transaction with their Ethereum wallet; we ask for usernames to give a more familiar and user-friendly experience for people that haven’t purchased ENS or other crypto domain names. At the moment, we’re storing user data in Firebase instead of on-chain because the current decentralized channels are too expensive or slow. We consider WalletWatch as pre-alpha. The website only renders in a mobile viewport and isn’t totally visually or computationally optimized, because we wanted to see if people liked this thing enough for us to spend more time making it polished. It scales up really nicely thanks to a year of research and development of the hashtable implemented in cachegrand, on the hardware used for benchmarking, an AMD EPYC 7502P, it was able to reach up to 5mln GET QPS and 4.5mln SET QPS, with batching up to 60mln GET QPS and up to 26MLN SET QPS. cachegrand is fast, it's fully Open Source, it's under a BSD 3-clause license - it can be used easily as standalone platform or incorporated in other ones without any licensing issue - and we are working to expand the Redis functionalities supported and to impelement a tiered storage to cache more data than the available memory. Longer term our goal is to expand the support to different platforms (e.g. memcache, kafka, etc.), add support to webassembly to have user defined functions and server side events, and of course a network bypass (combining XDP and a lockless FreeBSD tcp/ip stack) and a storage bypass. Show HN: We're building a search engine for GCP Hi HN, I previously wore SWE/SRE hats on GCP. Later, I was on the other side, managing thousands of machines. The friction points of onboarding and operating cloud systems are personal problems to me. I’ve found it hard to keep track of all the random cloud resources floating around, especially as my team’s assets proliferated. Occasionally, there is a resource affecting an outage but no one remembers where it is. I am constantly frustrated by existing tooling. APIs can work, after you’ve navigated the byzantine documentation, but I often find myself doing ad-hoc tasks which are best served by a UI. Unfortunately, the search bar in the GCP web console does not behave as you expect. For example, it only seems to search for prefixes, rather than substrings, on App Engine stuff. The GCP web console as a whole is boatloads of JavaScripts, 90+ navigation items on the left menu, and a constant stream of UX/UI controls. I'm fond of HackerNews and Craigslists, because ultimately, we just need to list/search and maybe submit a webform. This year I convinced my friend to quit their coding gig on Wall Street to help me make the cloud accessible. We’ve started with a small tool to this end: a search engine for the cloud. What we have demo-able for you today is the GCP component of it. Our tech: - Go with conservative sprinkles of VanillaJS. It allowed us to focus on the domain rather than the language. - SSR. Right now the pages are under the magical 14kb, but we’re eyeing the - HTMX (rendering fragments of HTML strings from the server) pattern - We’ll dabble with Elixir, Rust, and Zig in other parts of the system - GCP (We think GCP runs great once you get set. Show HN: I made Scrabble with modified rules Crapple is my take on "improved" Scrabble rules... obviously that is subjective, I'm not even sure I agree with it. You and your opponent share a rack of letters, and vowels are only obtained by opting to deduct a configurable amount of points from your score to receive a random vowel tile. Additionally, there is an alternate board layout with some new tile multipliers. This is an old project but I never posted it, so I thought what the hey, I am curious to hear what your guys' thoughts are on these rules. It's an old dead project so you can't hurt my feelings. Thanks! You can play it now against the computer in your browser (no signup required, but an account lets you create and play games against other humans). The Android app is the better version only because the AI will run on a seperate thread (in the browser version you might see a hiccup while it runs), and because Unity WebGL doesn't export retina-sized graphics (ie graphics may look less than sharp on your mobile device). It's your basic LAMP stack on AWS, with Laravel for the web framework and Unity (2017) for the client. The dictionary is stored as a DAWG. When you play a word, instead of giving you the dictionary definition, I wanted to do something different like provide a paragraph from a book that the word was used in. You can click the book icon to get some of those, I was scraping books in the public domain but gave up after a while when I was getting diminishing returns for words I lacked paragraphs for (if you try it you will likely see a lot of Moby Dick paragraphs as I never randomized it either). The AI was based on the scrabble AI algorithm (I think it was this, but can't remember now, https://ift.tt/hXZU87z... ). Since Crapple has modified rules, due the possibility of "buying" vowels on your turn, there is set of _potential_ playable words. The Crapple AI ranks each word based on the cost of the vowels needed with their probability of obtaining the needed vowels. The AI is not very intelligent, the difference between the 3 provided computer opponents is just the average word score they will play. If I had worked on this any longer I could have extended this to let them take into account what words/scores they may be setting you up for with their play, and other ideas. Each player's avatar is consistent, but uniquely generated for them. The application is a PWA, so it will not load resources again after the first load, unless there's an update. It uses IndexedDB and loads quite fast even with a lot of nested requests and folders. Import from Postman and Insomnia is available making it easy to import your pre-existing request collections. Only limitation is that it only supports CORS enabled endpoints for now. I plan to add cors proxy support later on. Show HN: Reach 100 – a (unsolvable?) puzzle game I recently remembered a game we used to play with pen and paper some 20 years ago, where you need to fill a 10x10 grid writing numbers in the grid up to 100 following 2 simple rules. After showing it to my kids I thought it would be nice to adapt it digitally so that they could play it more often (not needing to draw the grid etc.) and so that other people could play it as well. What I'm really interested in with this submission (beyond general feedback) is wether anybody knows the origin of the game and if it's solvable. Because that's the catch, my highest score of all time is 97 and it doesn't seem to be possible to go higher. I have the feeling this game is an adaptation of a more general problem and probably has its origin in some lecture. So, once again, if you know where it comes from I'd be really grateful. Mostly for amateur creators, but some famous ones use it as well. It has about 700k users so far. There are about 100k of those users who don't bother to upload an avatar, so they've had a boring default avatar for nearly 7 years. Today, I used my credits on DallE to do make them a bit more fun. Since the creators self-identify, I was able to create specific kinds of avatars for them. For example, if a creator is a writer, my DallE prompt would be: "an oil painting portrait of a serious-looking owl, standing in front of a typewriter" Voice Actor: "oil painting portrait of a robot who is made out of a microphone, wearing a hat and headphones" Comic Illustrator. Our ultimate goal is to create a platform with various features, which will help retail investors to better navigate through the market, and to protect them from large losses. Therefore, we assumed that our USP has its audience among people who invest in BTC, and who had similar experiences in the bear market as we did. With the help of a landing page and paid Ads we want to test if a product market fit is possible with such a service. Unfortunately this turned out harder than we though. The problem lies in the fact the most popular social networks, among them Twitter as well, have problems with crypto advertisements. I chose this project because I wanted to learn Angular, while also developing something useful. I have some prior backend experience. And, I was pleasantly surprised with how much you can achieve in the pure JS/Typescript these days. For my app, the backend only sends the daily puzzle data in JSON, while the entire game logic and interactions are completely implemented in the frontend. I wrote around 4000 lines of the frontend code for this project. For me, the best part was RxJS integration in Angular. It also had a fair amount of learning curve. However, once you have learned the basics, it saves a lot of redundant boilerplate code and makes the code more readable and clean. Capture everything in a single markdown or text file. Specify the file and use shortcut to open it in new tab from any VSCode project/workspace. Join here (100% perpetually free with no strings attached): https://brew.fm Some time ago, I built and showed HN[1] brew.fm, a tool helping artists remix each other’s work. It had been quiet, and I remembered how fun it was to work with the Spotify API, so I repurposed the tool to solve one of my own problems: missing out on new music of my favorite artists. I shared it on Reddit yesterday[2], and this seems to hit a spot for more people: so far 833 people connected their Spotify account. How it works: The tool simply shows your top 50 artists on Spotify over short, medium and long term, and checks those artists for new music. If you select a playlist, every artist involved in the tracks will be checked for new music, after which new releases are shown sorted by most recent release date.
